Mapping the Iraq Debate
The intention of this Blog is to register reflections about the metodology used to map the Iraq Debate and mainly to interact with the readers / navigators.
Mapping information about Iraq War was an interesting challenge. The web source consisted in 25 documents written by diverse authors from different areas ... from 2001 to 2005.
Today we published 74 maps about the debate and the report explaining our computer-supported argumentation approach....

Second Version of Iraq Debate Maps

The second version of Iraq Maps can be acessed at
http://kmi.open.ac.uk/projects/compendium/iraq/Home_Window_192168231111935426974.html

The main changes are the new menu bar, new icons, new questions in the maps
and horizontal way to represent the connections.

The difficulties are related to organise all nodes in a small area of the video screen.
It is good when the user can see all information in the same visual area (withou using the scroll bar) Sometimes the vertical way is easier for me to locate the nodes....

Next ideas/suggestions is to include a forum or this webblog to provoke more discussion and refletions (linked in the map)

Web Conference about Iraq maps

The web conference was very interesting and we could discuss more about the maps, navigation, design, and modelling...
The participants were Simon, Ale, Clara (UK) ; Al and Maarten (US).

Some aspects discussed:
1. about visual aspect: the maps are attractive.
2. about the content: it is difficult to understand the maps

Maarten's contributions:
" I like to know the meaning of the maps before navigating...
For that, the representation should be clear and consistent "
"It is important some minimal representation issues(clear rules)"
" It is difficult to understand concept maps, because there is no pattern...
IBIS is clearer - questions... statements... pros... cons...
there is a narrative ..."

Al gave some suggestions to organise the maps through IBIS approach, starting always with a question and organize information horizontally...

Simon suggested new icons to represent pro-war and anti-war statements...
Using plus and minus, which mean pro and con, is very confusing...
The first page is not clear... it woul be intersting new way to organise the navigation.
